Genoa – a great beginning… 5.9.19

We started with a bit of a sputter on Monday when we missed our connection in London Heathrow. We were fortunate that there was another plane to Milan shortly thereafter, so we took some deep breaths and got back on schedule for our train ride to Genoa. After 26 hours door to door, we had a nice dinner and a great night’s sleep.

We met our guide Antonella on Weds morning and had a delightful day with her! We were off by bus to the colorful fishing neighborhood of Boccadasse (Donkey’s Snout). An intermittent light rain presented an opportunity for a very uncrowded trip. The air was spectacular with very low humidity.

Keith, Giuseppe, and the small fishes… yummy lunch!

The rest of the afternoon was spent at a wonderful specialty food market and the seaport. The Maritime Museum and its companion Italian sub S 518 is a really well designed museum, and we shared the experience with many school groups! 🤪😎 A historian was doing a radio interview on the submarine, so even though Keith does not know Italian, he loved listening in and picking up some of the jist of the conversation. A very happy man!

At dinner last evening at a little local place in the medieval section of the city.

Today we walked around Genoa, taking in the boulevard of palaces on Via G. Garibaldi, several amazing churches, and a market — and headed to Nervi by train. I had read about the ocean walkway in Nervi— Passeggiata Anita Garibaldi— and I knew it had to be on our itinerary. It certainly did not disappoint- dramatic and spectacular scenery on a clear, sunny day in the low 60s. Wow!

Feeling relaxed, energized and tired… off to Milan tomorrow to join up with our small tour group with Amber Road Tours. Back with you in 2 or 3 days. Ciao!
